Free Conference on Autism for Parents and Professionals

For Release: April 7, 2008
Contact: Jason Schmidt
212-244-5560 ext. 2059

Free Conference on Autism for Parents and Professionals

QSAC (Quality Services for the Autism Community) with funding from the Queens Delegation of the New York City Council is pleased to present two free workshops on Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Autism, a complex and baffling neurological disability, is often difficult to recognize at the onset. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability now occurring in 1 in 150 children.

QSAC, an award winning thirty year old non-profit organization is one of the City’s largest agencies dedicated to services for the autism community. The New York City Council through the efforts of Councilman David Weprin, last year, created the New York City Autism Initiative in an effort to reach out to parents of newly diagnosed children and the professionals that serve them.

The first conference is Wednesday May 21st from 8:30am to 2:30pm at the Doubletree-JFK in Jamaica, Queens.

The second will be on Tuesday June 10th from 8:30am to 2:30pm at Dante’s in East Elmhurst Queens.

The conferences will present separate tracks, one for parents/families and the other for professionals. Presenters will include Peter Sturmey, PhD, Lisa Veglia, LCSW, MPA, Francisco Monegro, MD, PhD, Kristen DuMoulin, PhD, Ronald Lee, PhD, BCBA, Anne Denning, MA, BCBA, and Zenayda LaFontaine, MS.Ed, BCBA. Each conference will include complimentary breakfast, lunch, transportation, and daycare.

Call Kevin Mattivi at 212-244-5560 ext. 2060 for more information. Visit www.qsac.com and click on Upcoming Autism Workshops for all the details.

Quality Assurance Inspector

As I am sure you’ve heard by now, QSAC has a Quality Assurance Inspector who travels around to ensure our services are being delivered appropriately. Recently, a driver of one of our vans was observed speeding and driving recklessly with consumers in the van. A staff person was not at their in-home appointment when they reported they were and someone was observed stealing food from a group home.

While the majority of our staff are exemplary and put the clients first (see past stories in Q-View), unfortunately there are always a few bad apples.
